Pandanus utilis

(Pandanaceae)

“Screw Pine.”

Madagascar.

From a genus containing more than 60 trees and shrubs, P.utilis is dioecious – male and female forms exist, and both can be found within the Parque. There are a group of several trees at location 55 . The plants are characterized by their adventitious “stilt” roots in the surrounding area. The male plants produce a yellowish, spiked flower, but the females display a distinctive, pineapple like, globulus fruit (see photo above, May 2011).  The hard seeds gradually fall away as the fruit matures. The fibrous leaves are traditionally used for matting and basketwork.
