Sterculia coccinea

Sterculia coccinea

“Kelampang” “Scarlet Shower.”

To quote the 1987 survey of the Parque de Malaga….

“After the….monument, we find a deciduous tree which flowers very irregularly, a species of the Sterculiaceae family, still unclassified, and very rare in Malaga gardens.”

Seen here, May 2011, in flower and labelled as Sterculia coccinea. A spindly shrub. Large leaves spirally arranged; pendant white flowers covered in fine hairs and then followed by an impressive orange seedpod containing large black seeds.
