Harpephyllum caffrum

(Anacardiaceae) “Ciruelo de los Cafres.”“Wild Plum”

South Africa.

Harpephyllum is a large evergreen tree, to 15m, common in South Africa. A member of the Mango family and known as the “Wild Plum,” it is characterised by its pinnate leaves, whitish green flowers and plum-like fruits (seen here in May 2011) which mature from green to red. Attracts bees and butterflies. The bark  is smooth when young, becoming grey-brown with age.
